Seymour Johnson F-15E crashes SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. (AFNS) -- An F-15E Strike Eagle from the 4th Fighter Wing here crashed about 10 miles west of the impact area on the Dare County Bomb Range at approximately 12:30 p.m. July 11. The two crew members, Maj. Pete Whelan, instructor pilot, and Capt. Ramiro Martinez, student weapon systems officer, ejected safely and were picked up at approximately 1:15 p.m. by a helicopter from the Coast Guard Station at Elizabeth City, N.C. The Strike Eagle crashed in a remote, densely wooded area. It was carrying BDU-33s (inert training munitions) while on a training mission on the range.
