During the last years of the Shah the Imperial Iranian
Air Force took charge of the 32 F-4Ds. A few years
later 117 F-4Es and 16 RF-4E reconnaissance Phantoms
followed.
In its top period the IIAF Phantom fleet comprised
255 F-4s to equip 13 squadrons. In the late 1980s none
RF-4E were reported to be operational while the
operational F-4D/E fleet was estimated at about one
and a half squadron.
