Some F-4Cs were rebuild to EF-4C becoming the first
Wild Weasel F-4 version. For recce tasks 503
RF-4Cs have been operated by 12 different USAF Wings.
Next type was the F-4D of which 793 F-4Ds were flown
by 30 Wings including some Wild Weasel EF-4Ds.

The last fighter version was the F-4E of which the
USAF has operated 831 F-4Es in 33 Wings. During the
Vietnam War the Phantom has served with 16 USAF
squadrons in the Southeast Asia in which a total
of 442 USAF F-4s and another 83 RF-4Cs were written

 US NAVY
The first USN Phantoms were 45 F4H-1s operated in
by two units. In 1960 the US Navy formed the first
Phantom unit, a Replacement Air Group (RAG) which
was tasked with training of future F-4 pilots and
backseat RIOs. VF-101, first at Key West and later
Oceana, became the first RAG while VF-121 based at
 Miramar became the second.

The 48th Phantom onwards was designated F-4H-1F (First)
later renamed F-4A while the F4H-1 becoming the F-4B. The
649 built F-4Bs were flown in 27 US Navy and Marine Corps
squadrons.including as electronic warfare version EF-4B.
A dozen F-4Bs were modified to F-4G. The F-4J was the
follow-on version of the F-4B of which a total of 522
F-4Js were operated by 24 US Navy (Reserve) squadrons.
F-4Js were heavily used in Vietnam were 71 US Navy
F-4s were lost in combat. A few F-4Js were modified to
 EF-4J.

In total 228 US Navy F-4Bs were refurbished to F-4N which
was flown by 13 USN squadrons. At the end many F-4Ns were
converted to QF-4N drones. The F-4J was modernised to F-4S
standard of which 248 F-4Js were rebuilt. The F-4S has
been operated by 11 US Navy squadrons.

USMC squadrons and two training units. Of the USMC
RF-4B, the photographic reconnaissance version of the
 F-4B, 46 RF-4Bs have been delivered. 522 F-4Js were
built for the USN and USMC. During the Vietnam War the
USMC was early and heavily involved resulting in 95
USMC F-4s lost in combat. The F-4N was operated by
eight US Marine Corps squadrons. Many surviving USMC
